RAY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) — A state agency has proposed a change in the Adirondack land-use plan to clear the way for a 34-mile multi-use recreational trail from Tupper Lake to Lake Placid.

The Adirondack Park Agency wants to replace a stretch of deteriorating train tracks with a wide, flat rail trail for bicycling, walking, snowmobiling and other uses. The Adirondack Railway Preservation Society sued to stop it, saying the State Land Master Plan defines travel corridors like the railroad in terms of cars and trains, not trails. A judge agreed.

The amendment proposed Thursday adds rail trails to the travel corridor definition. It also applies to other railroad corridors the state might acquire in the future.

Public hearings will be held in Ray Brook, Old Forge and Albany in April.
