Adirondack State Prison Converted Into Adolescent Facility

RAY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) — A longtime state prison in the Adirondacks will begin accepting incarcerated adolescents later this month.

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports that the Adirondack Correctional Facility in Ray Brook has been renamed the Adirondack Adolescent Offender Facility.

The conversion of the medium-security prison into a facility for adolescent offenders comes after New York raised the age of criminal responsibility from 16 to 18. New York had been imprisoning adolescent offenders in the same facilities as adults and automatically tried 16- and 17-year-olds as adults, regardless of the type of crime.

The newspaper reports that the other prison being readied for adolescent offenders is the Groveland Annex south of Rochester.
