MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — The town of Bennington is commemorating the Revolutionary War Battle with events throughout the weekend.

The battle was fought in 1777 just over the border in New York when soldiers fighting for the British marched toward Bennington in an attempt to seize weapons stored there. Thursday was Bennington Battle Day, a Vermont state holiday.

On Saturday, the town is holding a 5-kilometer road race starting and ending at the Bennington Monument. Sunday features a parade and a "living history encampment" with a cannon muster and military drills at the monument.

Tours of this battlefield will also be provided in Walloomsac, New York, on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
