Bills Add Cundiff; Carpenter Still Handling FGs, For Now

The Buffalo Bills have signed veteran kicker Billy Cundiff, but it appears that at least for now, he'll only be responsible for kickoffs, not field goals.

The Bills have cut ties with Jordan Gay, who had been handling kickoff duties. Head coach Rex Ryan said Wednesday that Gay didn't do anything to lose his job, yet the move was made. There is speculation that this move is a bit of a warning to Dan Carpenter, a veteran kicker himself who has missed two field goals and an extra point so far this season.

The story on the Bills' team site reflects the distinct roles the two will have, but also seems to reflect the possibility that Cundiff may be asked to do more in the future. Specifically, Ryan's line below about ''We''ll see how everything plays out.''

Billy is a guy that obviously has a history in this league, but he does have a strong leg so he can handle kickoffs and he’s been a good kicker,” said Ryan. “We’ll see how everything plays out.”

As far as Carpenter and Cundiff know their roles for this week are separate and distinct.

“All I’ve been told is everything is the same,” said Carpenter. “Obviously Billy (Cundiff) is here instead of Jordan.”

Cundiff has been in the league since 2002, spending time the Cowboys, Saints, Browns, Ravens and Redskins. Carpenter came into the NFL in 2008 with the Miami Dolphins. This is this third year in Buffalo.

Buffalo has also signed WR Denarius Moore, adding some depth with Sammy Watkins expected to miss at least another.

The Bills are off to a 2-2 start and will play at Tennessee this weekend.
