The New York State ELA and Mathematics test scores are out and it looks like students did better than expected.  Meanwhile, a study released by the National Assessment of Educational Progress shows that New York's standards are much higher than the rest of the country.

So, how tough are the questions?  The NYS Education Department recently released about half of the actual questions for parents, teachers and students to review.  What you might find is that these questions are tough for students and probably will be tough for some parents to master.

Most of the questions released were answered correctly by most of the students who took the test.  There were some questions students struggled with, however. Here's an example of a question that only 33% of the 3rd graders were able to answer correctly.

Noel read 90 minutes each day for 6 days. Tyra read 60 minutes each day for

8 days. What is the difference, in minutes, between the total amount of time

Noel read and the total amount of time Tyra read?

A  30

B  40

C  60

D  80
