ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Work has begun to transform the Greater Rochester International Airport into what Gov. Andrew Cuomo (KWOH'-moh) says will be a state-of-the-art transportation center.

Cuomo on Tuesday announced the groundbreaking for renovations to the aging airport in Rochester.

The $53.7 million project will feature a new solar canopy for night-time lighting and rainwater collection, a smartphone lot where drivers can wait for arrivals, energy efficiency, Bluetooth connectivity, and new signage, accessibility and landscaping.

The investment also will include a study into creating business opportunities for accessibility technology in airports.

Cuomo says the improvements will create a "gateway" to all the Finger Lakes region has to offer and will support nearly 10,000 jobs in the region.
