The State Department of Environmental Conservation is warning drivers in Central New York and the North Country to be alert for Moose in the Adirondacks and surrounding areas.

The DEC says this time of year is peak activity season for moose as they are wandering forests looking for mates, leading them to areas where they are not typically seen.

Moose are most active at dusk, and can be difficult to see at night because of their dark coloring and height - which puts their heads and much of their bodies above vehicle headlights.

The DEC says drivers should use caution when driving at dawn or dusk, reduce your speed and watch the roadsides.
