A judge in Schoharie County begins deliberating the fate of a former Owego car dealer accused of murdering his estranged wife almost fifteen years ago.

Closing arguments in 4th murder trial of Calvin Harris concluded May 19.  Harris is accused in the presumed murder of Michele Harris, who disappeared September 11, 2001.

Harris was convicted twice in Tioga County with those convictions overturned and the third trial, that had been moved to Schoharie County last year ended with a hung jury.

The defense presented three hours of closing arguments contending law enforcement and prosecutors had refused to consider other suspects and focused all their efforts on implicating Harris.

Prosecutors said Harris was the only person who had a reason to see Michele dead as their divorce proceeded, fearing he would loose a large part of his car dealerships, money and even the couple’s four children.

Michele Harris’ body has never been found and no murder weapon has been recovered.

Judge Richard Mott’s consideration of the testimony is described as similar to the deliberations in a jury trial.  He has given no indication as to when a verdict may be delivered.
