DiNapoli: DMV Needs To Crackdown On Unregistered Repair Shops

The New York State Department of Motors Vehicles has not done enough to crackdown on unregistered auto repair shops and inspection stations.

That's according to an audit released by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

“DMV has a responsibility to help prevent consumers from being taken for a ride by unscrupulous repair shops,” said DiNapoli. “This means doing more to ensure that New York’s repair shops are legitimately registered and working harder to investigate and resolve consumer complaints in a timely manner.”

A review of DMV data identified about 23,600 automotive businesses across the the state with expired licenses or registrations.

The audit also found the agency is slow to schedule hearings to resolve consumer complaints.
