A new report from Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield says that billions of dollars in health care costs could be saved if Upstate New Yorkers simply follow their prescription medication directions.

The report says millions of adults with conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and depression fail to follow the instructions on their medication - resulting in higher health risks and more frequent hospitalizations and costly treatments.

Improving prescription adherence would save an estimated $1.5 billion in medical costs.
