A former member of the Whitesboro Fire Department has been posthumously awarded the Fire Safety Educator of the Year Award by the Fireman's Association of the State of New York.

Jennifer Cortese, who spent much of her time in local schools teaching fire safety, died in January at the age of 43. Jennifer's mother, Cecilia Corts, says the award is the culmination of her daughter's work with the Whitesboro Fire Department.

Jennifer's family was presented the award during a ceremony at the Oneida County Volunteer Fireman's Association's annual Fire and Safety Expo at Mohawk Valley Community College.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente also proclaimed today as Jennifer Cortese Day in Oneida County.
