Before more than 4,900 cartons of cigarettes could go up in smoke, a Fulton man was arrested for alleged tax fraud after getting them ready for sale.

On Wednesday, January 23, 2014 New York State Police arrested 46-year old Miguel Espinosa of Somers Drive in Fulton for allegedly possessing nearly one million illegal cigarettes with the intent to sell them.  The arrest was made following the discovery of 4,903 cartons of cigarettes valued at $210,829 after a search warrant was executed at a storage facility in Van Buren, New York.

Espinosa is now being charged with second-degree criminal tax fraud, felony attempt to evade and / or defeat the cigarette tax, and felony possession and transport of ten thousand or more unstamped cigarettes.

He was arraigned in the Town of Lysander Court and is being held at the Onondaga County Jail on $25,000 bail.
