Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has written to the U.S. Department of the Interior, urging the department to designate the New York State Barge Canal as a National Historic Landmark.

Last month, the National Historic Landmarks Committee of the National Park System Advisory Board moved to approve the designation.

Final approval is now needed from the Department of the Interior to officially designate the Canal as a National Historic Landmark.

“Listing the New York State Barge Canal as a National Historic Landmark would fully honor the nationally-significant role that New York’s canal system has played in our country’s history,” Gillibrand said.

Gillibrand first pushed for the Historic Landmark designation for the canal in April.

The 525-mile canal stretches from Albany to Buffalo.
