The New York Yankees have announced that former Herkimer Generals pitcher Willie Gabay has gotten the call up to the High-A Tampa Yankees.

Gabay was the first baseball player from Herkimer College to be drafted by a Major League baseball team, when he was selected in the 15th round by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012.

The Generals all-time strike outs leader earned the call after going 2-1 with a 4.44 ERA while striking out 27 batters and walking only 13 in 24 plus innings of work for the Class A Charleston Riverdogs.

Gabay was released by the Rays after the 2014 season where he went 0-1 with a 2.57 ERA. In 2015 he was signed by the Yankees organization where he suited up for Pulaski. There he was 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA in 24 innings with 20 strikeouts.

His debut with Tampa came on June 25, where he pitched two scoreless innings and struck out two batters.

"Willie has an outstanding work ethic, and has made the most of the opportunities given to him," Herkimer Head Coach Jason Rathbun said. "He's a great representation of what a Herkimer baseball player really is. We're all proud of each accomplishment he makes!"

Gabay holds the Herkimer Generals record for strikeouts with 141 in two seasons.
