The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says the clean-up at the Triple Cities Metal Finishing site in Hillcrest is over.

The DEC spent 18 months overseeing contractors removing 284 tons of soil and waste sediment and sealing the location to prevent the spread of contaminants and vapor intrusion.

The clean-up followed reports of a high number of childhood cancers in the 1990s.

Heavy metals like arsenic, lead, cadmium and zinc were found in elevated levels at the site but the pollution was not believed to have affected drinking water.

The cost of the abatement is estimated at $189,000

The Hillcrest metal plating operation had been moved to the Kirkwood Industrial Park in 2000.

Town of Fenton officials say they hope the cleaned site can be used for new development.
