Rome, NY (WIBX) - An accident over the weekend lead to the arrest of a homeless Rome teen.

According to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office,18-year old Steven J. Wheeler drove the vehicle he was operating unlawfully into a ditch, while attempting to make a U-Turn on Route 26 North near West Branch.

Wheeler and his female passenger, who was not identified, did not have identification or a drivers license and officials say they were acting suspiciously when questioned. It was later revealed that Wheeler, who lied about his identity, did so for fear of outstanding warrants for violating his probation on a sexual abuse conviction, and a larceny charge he failed to appear in Rome City Court for.

Wheeler is now facing False Personation, Unlicensed Operation of a vehicle, and officials say another charge of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle is pending. The suspect was transported to Oneida County Jail in lieu of $500 cash or $1,000 bond. He is to appear in the Town of Lee Court, where he was arraigned, at a later date to face the charges.
