Utica, NY (WIBX) - The Department of Veterans Affairs and HUD say 30 homeless veterans found permanent housing in and around the City of Rome.

Through their joint efforts, HUD's Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing Program combines a HUD Housing Choice Voucher from Section 8 with VA case management and supportive services.
"The homeless population," Acting Team Leader for the Homeless Veterans Program in Syracuse Adam Ormsby says, "has really depended on those Section 8 vouchers to house people and get them out of shelters and get them into permanent housing. But, the waiting list was so long that this really makes a significant difference in that we can use them right away."

Ormsby says the vouchers are really only one part of the program. He says what the VA offers is the supportive case management that keeps the vets in their new homes.

He says, nationally, HUD has allocated 30,000 Housing Choice Section 8 Vouchers for eligible homeless veterans.

Since the program began in 2008, 329 homeless vets have found permanent housing in upstate and central New York.
