If you've been watching the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, you probably have seen the swimming events featuring world-record holder Michael Phelps. Did you happen to notice those pepperoni looking marks on his back? Those bruises are caused by a treatment known as 'Cupping.'

This procedure can be used for almost anything. The list includes sports recovery, pain reduction, arthritis, fibromyalgia, eczema, acne, migraines, cellulite, and even anxiety/depression. The idea behind 'cupping' is simple, but should only be done by a trained professional. Kelley Holmes-Morton is the owner of 'Heads-R-Turning' Salon & Spa in Ilion, NY. She's a NYS Licensed Massage Therapist, and has been trained extensively on this treatment method.

The science behind this age-old therapy involves bringing blood-flow to the muscles and to the surface of the skin, which explains the bright red bruising that occurs. Essentially it is just like a giant hickey. Olympic athletes, like Michael Phelps, use this therapy to recover from hours and hours of physical exertion, and obviously swimming. It works great for workout recovery. The term 'cupping' derives from the devices used because they are essentially giant suction cups.

This treatment is available right here in Central New York. If you'd like to make an appointment with Kelley at her salon & spa you can visit her website, or call her to make an appointment at (315) 894-1400. See what cupping can do for you.
