Since the beginning of summer, the Oneida County Health Department has tested 97 mosquito pools for the West Nile Virus.

Officials say one of those pools has come back positive for the virus.

West Nile can be transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito and in some cases cause illness in people that can range from mild to severe.

The health department says taking personal protection measures is the key to reducing the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

Wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves when outdoors for long periods.

Use an insect repellant containing DEET carefully following the manufacturer’s application instructions.
