BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A troubled upstate New York industrial plant that's on probation for clean air violations plans to begin shutting down next week.

Documents filed in federal court in Buffalo Friday indicate Tonawanda Coke Corp. will begin the shutdown Oct. 16 and has only enough money to pay employees for another week.

An attorney for the plant didn't immediately return a phone message Friday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office says that because of the company's plans to close, a judge has ruled that a $2 million community service payment required after its 2013 conviction is due immediately.

Neighbors of the plant have long sought its closure, saying it's been making them sick.

The plant burns coal to produce coke, which is used as a fuel and in steelmaking. It employs about 100 people.
