ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state will investigate allegations that pregnant women have been the victims of workplace discrimination.

The Democrat announced Wednesday that he has directed the Division of Human Rights to look into allegations of pregnancy-related discrimination by several major companies.

The New York Times reported earlier this month that some of the nation's most prestigious companies systematically discriminated against pregnant employees by passing them over for promotions and raises, and firing them when they complained.

Cuomo says other agencies will launch an education and outreach campaign for workers to know their rights and for employers to know their roles in preventing pregnancy discrimination.

The campaign includes ads on New York City subway trains and a new link on the governor's website: www.ny.gov .
