ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Worn and tattered American flags can be dropped off at collection points all across New York state for proper disposal at an annual event over Memorial Day weekend.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo says more than two dozen drop-off locations from Long Island to Buffalo are accepting flags starting Tuesday and running through May 22.

The Democrat is urging New Yorkers to bring their old national banners to these locations so the flags can be retired "properly with respect and honor."

The state Office of General Services will collect the flags.

They'll be taken to the New York State Fair outside Syracuse, where they'll be disposed in a bonfire during the May 26 Memorial Watchfire organized by a local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Drop-off locations include the State Office Building at 207 Genesee Street.
