New York State's minimum wage is set to go up to $8.75 an hour.

The $.75 increase on the current minimum wage will take effect on New Year's Eve as part of a series of increases passed by state lawmakers in 2013.

Minimum wage workers will also get another $.25 raise next year to $9 an hour on December 31, 2015, but opponents say that could increase labor costs forcing employers to cut jobs.

Supporters of the wage hike want cities like New York to be able to raise the wage on their own.
