NY Village Places Restrictions On Employee Social Media

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — A village on Long Island will now ban political posts on its social media pages and place restrictions on employees and volunteers' personal use of social media.

Mayor Dennis Siry says the Amityville Board of Trustees approved a new social media policy that is in the process of being signed by all volunteers and employees. Newsday reports the new policy supersedes a previous policy that applied only to the village's fire department.

Amityville is currently facing a federal lawsuit filed by volunteer firefighter James Squicciarini, who says the fire council suspended him in 2017 for endorsing a mayoral candidate.

Siry says the lawsuit was not the reason for the new policy and that he had been spoken with officials about creating a new policy for some time.
