The 2013 Oneida County Summer Youth Employment Program kicked off today with the annual Work Readiness Day at Mohawk Valley Community College.

About area 300 youth will participate in the program, in which low-income teens work with local employers and non-profits  to learn work skills.

For many, it represents their first work experience and their first paycheck.

Work sites include the Utica Municipal Housing Authority, the Mid-Utica Neighborhood Preservation Corporation and the Utica Zoo

The progam is funded by the state.
