Utica, NY (WIBX) - Law enforcement officials are crediting the use of a Pole Camera to capture a Utica man wanted on several open warrants. According to the report, after a traffic stop on Genesee street earlier this week, a passenger exited the vehicle and fled the scene. The officer gave chase but lost sight of the suspect. However, police say dispatchers were able to direct responding officers to the location, to assist in tracking the man they say was subsequently found hiding behind a snow bank in the parking lot of a nearby establishment.

Officials say they were able to locate the suspect through the use of a Pole Camera system. 21-year-old Kwamae Smith of Utica was taken into custody after allegedly fighting with the officers who were attempting to handcuff him. The report states that Smith is facing the following charges in addition to his previous warrants.

  • 4 counts of Resisting Arrest-A misdemeanor
  • Reckless Endangerment 1st-D felony-County Court warrant
  • Criminal Possession of a loaded firearm-C-felony-County Court warrant
  • Unlawful Possession of Marijuana-violation
  • 2 counts of Harassment 2nd-violation

Officials are crediting Utica Fire Fighter/Dispatcher William Thibault with assisting the Police dispatchers by using the Pole Camera system to find the exact location of Smith.
