ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — State Senate Democrats have introduced legislation they say would alleviate the increased tax burden many New York property owners face under the new federal tax plan.

Democratic lawmakers discussed the package of five bills Monday, two days before the Legislature is scheduled to wrap up its 2018 session.

The measures include one that would allow the state to ensure state and local tax deductions above the federal government's $10,000 cap remain in place for New Yorkers earning under $300,000 annually. Another bill would freeze property taxes for homeowners once they turn 65.

Senate Republicans who hold the chamber's leadership say they've already led the way by ensuring passage of measures that provide property tax relief and make it more affordable for older New Yorkers to remain in their homes.
