Update: 01/21/2014 6:57am Ilion Police have releases a statement regarding the events that transpired at 60 High Street in Ilion.

According to the release local police responded to the residence at 6:53pm on Monday, January 20, 2014 for a report of a domestic incident.  A man inside, later identified as 57-year old Gene A. Wedemeyer, allegedly refused to answer the door and barricaded himself inside the upstairs apartment.

Residents of homes nearby were evacuated for hours while authorities tried to negotiate with Wedemeyer.

Police say Wedemeyer became increasingly agitated, throwing several burning items from second story windows, including two molotov cocktails and a hammer, which struck two officers.

Police say they tried for hours to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion.  However, them an armed himself with a machete and knife, threatening to use them against officers.  He then, according to Ilion Police, intentionally set fire to the building's attic, and refused to come out of the burning building.

Emergency responders from multiple agencies put out the fire.  Once the fire was extinguished they found Wedemeyer's body inside.
