The Statewide Winter Energy Tour made a stop at SUNY Poly today.

State energy leaders highlighted ways communities can become involved in local power generation and distribution to become less reliant on the electrical grid.

Gil Quiniones, President and CEO of the New York Power Authority, says the focus of the tour is on community-based microgrids.

A microgrid that opened in 2009 provides power to the hospital on the St. Luke’s Campus of Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare and Utica College.

New York state is encouraging investments in locally-generated power systems through New York Prize, a $40 million competition announced by Governor Cuomo.
