Utica, NY (WIBX) - A West Utica man, who became a paraplegic following a snowmobile accident three years ago, had his wheelchair stolen from his driveway. The callous act happened Tuesday to 24-year-old Shane Young. "I left the wheelchair outside like I usually do, you know, if I'm not using it, and I was gone for about a half-hour to an hour, and it was stolen out of my driveway," he said. Utica police are on the case, hoping to catch the perpetrator who made off with Young's wheelchair.

Young said his wheelchair was custom built, making it difficult to replace. "This was built, you know, specially for me to my height and weight and all that so, no other chair is comfortable for me using," he said. Young continued, saying the heartless act of stealing a disabled person's only option for mobility is hard to believe. "There's a lot of thoughts, you know, I pretty much can't say...you know, it's pretty low," he said. In the meantime, anyone with information about the wheelchair stolen from 45 Faas Avenue in West Utica is asked to contact police.
