Freddy Garcia gave up a three run shot in the first inning to Andy Dirks, and Detroit tacked on three more in the second as the Tigers beat the Yankees 7-5 at Yankee Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

New York rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth off of closer Jose Valverde, but 'Papa Grande' got Eric Chavez to fly out to right to end the game.

Garcia drops to 0-2 with an ERA of 12.51 after tossing just 1 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks.

Miguel Cabrera drove in three runs, including a solo homer in the 8th off of Cody Epply, his seventh jack of the season.

Valverde was brought into the game in a non-save situation in the ninth with the Tigers up 7-2. He allowed three runs on three hits and walk, including the second of two Nick Swisher solo home runs - his 5th and 6th of the season.

Curtis Granderson hit his seventh homer, driving in two runs on two hits.

Drew Smyly (1-0) earned his first career win, striking out seven in six innings of two hit, one-run ball.
