A Utica man is facing weapons charges after a traffic stop in the area of South and St. Vincent Streets.

18-year old Trevon Brown was also charged with resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.

During the traffic stop, officers developed information there was marijuana in the vehicle and on one of the occupants.

Utica Police say while searching Brown, an officer felt a hard metal object in his pants that the officer believed was a handgun.

They say Brown struggled with officers and was taken to the ground and handcuffed.  Officers allegedly recovered a 22 caliber handgun from the area of Brown's boxer shorts that was reported stolen.

UPD Chief Mark Williams says a video taken by a civilian that has gone viral only shows a small portion of the incident.

Williams says the entire incident was caught on body cameras worn by the officers.

He publicly thanked Sergeant Scott Berger and Police Officers Michael Mahay and Paul Dewey, who he says did an outstanding job in preventing harm to themselves and Brown.

Williams say while Brown was actively resisting arrest, the firearm could have accidentally discharged if not for the actions by the officers.  The following video was posted on YouTube on the sheena ruffin channel:
