Woman Denies Charges She Pretended To Be A Lawyer

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — A suburban New York woman accused of pretending to be a lawyer has pleaded not guilty.

The Journal News reports 42-year-old Delilah Torres, of Peekskill, was arraigned Wednesday on two counts of offering a false instrument for filing and one count of practicing or appearing as attorney-at-law without being admitted and registered.

Westchester County prosecutors say Torres was representing a client in Pleasantville Village Court in June when she was questioned about her credentials. Prosecutors say Torres claimed she had graduated from Columbia Law School in May but hadn't taken the bar exam.

Torres failed to return to court with proof she was admitted to practice. Prosecutors say they discovered Torres never attended Columbia Law School or took the bar exam.

A hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 16.
