The Yankees lost 4-3 to the Royals in Kansas City on Thursday night. Much more importantly, future Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera tore his ACL while shagging fly-balls prior to the game.

The 42-year-old, who is in his 18th season, is likely out for the rest of the year. Manager Joe Girardi said he would sleep on his decision about who would more into the closer's role going forward.

Rookie David Phelps was dealt the loss after allowing six hits and two runs, in four innings.

Mike Moustakas drove in three runs and clubbed his fourth homer.

Derek Jeter picked up four more hits to raise his average to .404, and scored two runs. Mark Texeira drove in two.

The loss sets New York back to 13-12. The Royals moved to 8-16.
