April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The YWCA of the Mohawk Valley is using the occasion to bring attention to the issues of domestic violence and child sexual abuse.

Executive Director Diane Stancato says the YWCA provided advocacy in 801 cases of sexual violence in Oneida County in 2018.

Stancato says while the issues of sexual assault and child abuse are brought to the forefront this month, the YWCA deals with them all year long.

Sancato say the YWCA is taking part in Safer Bars, a statewide initiative to prevent sexual violence and promote safe, healthy environments in nightlife establishments

They'll also be holding Take Back the Night event on April 18th at Herkimer College from 5:00 to 7:00  to address the issue of sexual violence in the community.
