$15M In Septic System Upgrade Funding Goes To 31 Counties

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state is starting its $75 million program to replace aging septic system in more than 30 counties.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday that the first $15 million will be split among 31 counties in the program's initial year. The Democrat says the state Departments of Environmental Conservation and Health, and the Environmental Facilities Corp. have identified locations where system upgrades will protect the water quality.

Funding for the multiyear effort was established last year.

It provides funds to counties to eligible reimburse property owners for part of the cost of replacing crumbling septic systems with more environmentally effective systems.

The amount of the funding ranges from $75,000 to $225,000 each for most of the 30 upstate counties selected and $1 million for Nassau County on Long Island.
