Today is National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

ACR Health and the YWCA of the Mohawk Valley are hosting an event at the Radisson Hotel in Utica focusing on prevention and education.

Erin Bortel, Director of Prevention Services at ACR Health, says they're seeing an increase in HIV infections among female populations.

Data from the State Health Department shows that 21 Oneida County residents were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2015-2016, including nine women.

Bortel says ACR Health encourages women and teenage girls to learn about the risks of HIV/AIDS and take action to protect their health, including getting tested for HIV.
