State Assembly members are proposing hiking the state's aid to public schools to nearly $24 billion for the coming fiscal year, an increase of $1.8 billion.

The proposal is $830 million more than what Governor Andrew Cuomo has proposed and is the largest increase in school aid since the 2008-09 state budget.

The plan also includes an increase in Foundation Aid to school districts of over $1 billion and provides $456 million in restoration to the Gap Elimination Adjustment (GEA), which is based in part on district and student needs, growth in enrollment and the growth in students who are English-language learners

Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi says the proposal will help school districts reduce class sizes and maintain the programs that students need to get the best education possible.

Brindisi say it also removes the requirement in the Executive budget that school aid increases must be tied to proposed changes in the teacher evaluation system.
