Binghamton police say a man died after he was shot repeatedly near a downtown park.

Authorities say officers found the body of 24-year-old Tyquan Gumbs of Binghamton in the rear of an apartment building at 10 Fayette Street.

Police were called to the scene at 8:29 p.m. Friday. Sources familiar with the investigation say he had been shot in the head and the heart.

Uniform patrol officers and city detectives converged on the neighborhood near the former Columbus School, the building where Binghamton City School District offices are located.

Shortly after the shooting, police were looking for three men who had been seeing leaving the area. They were spotted heading west into Columbus Park.

The shooting occurred as hundreds of baseball fans watched a Binghamton Rumble Ponies game at NYSEG Stadium just four blocks away.

A coroner's van transported the body from Fayette Street to Lourdes Hospital on Binghamton's West Side just before midnight.

Investigators did not release the results of an autopsy and they also did not indicate whether they had identified anyone who was involved in the attack.

Gumbs was the second man fatally shot in the city in less than a week. Last Saturday, 22-year-old Brandon Hernandez of Binghamton was shot repeatedly in the head.

Hernandez was killed outside an Orton Avenue after-hours club. Police have charged 26-year-old Jihad Ray with second-degree murder in that shooting. Ray was taken into custody around 3 p.m. when a SWAT team converged on his residence on Chamberlain Street on the city's East Side.

It's unclear whether the Binghamton shootings are linked or if either may be connected with an attack on an Endicott man outside a Johnson City bar two hours before the Orton Avenue killing.
