SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say human remains found in the Mojave Desert this week belong to a San Diego-area couple who vanished with their two young sons in February 2010.

San Bernardino County Sheriff Edward J. McMahon confirmed Friday that the bodies of 40-year-old Joseph McStay and his 43-year-old wife, Summer, were found in shallow graves near Victorville.

He says the manner of death appears to be homicide. The cause has not been determined.

Four bodies were discovered in the barren scrubland. McMahon says authorities believe the other remains belong to the McStay children, but they have more work to do to confirm it.

There were no signs of forced entry at the family's home in Fallbrook when they disappeared. Investigators had believed they voluntarily left for Mexico.
