NEW YORK (AP) — Officials say firefighters broke through ice on a New York City pond with their hands and went chest-deep into the water to try to save an 11-year-old boy who fell in, but the child later died.

Police say Anthony Perez died Tuesday after falling through thin ice in Forest Park in Queens.

The Fire Department of New York says the boy walked out about 50 feet onto the frozen pond before the ice gave way.

Police say he was unconscious and unresponsive when firefighters reached him and pulled him out.

The boy was pronounced dead at a hospital. Two firefighters were treated for hypothermia.

A sign posted by the pond warns park goers that the ice isn't thick enough to support a person's weight.
