The driver of a car travelling on Route 45 in the Jefferson County town of Champion is in critical condition, her two year-old passenger dead, following an accident that took place on Friday night.

42-Year old Wilhelmina Johnson from Copenhagen was driving northeast with the child in the rear passenger car seat when, according to New York State Police, she is believed to have "...exited from the south side of the roadway, over corrected and drifted into the (oncoming) lane..."  42-Year old Brian Phillips from Carthage was driving a Dodge pick-up in the opposite direction when Johnson's Nissan Versa is said to have crossed into his path.  Troopers say he tried to avoid the crash but could not.

Johnson and the toddler were airlifted with massive head trauma.  The toddler was pronounced dead at 8:48pm later night, December 13, 2013.  Johnson was in critical condition at the last report.

Phillips was treated and released at the accident scene.
