The Utica Comets season came to an end at the hands of the rival Syracuse Crunch on Saturday night, losing 5-2 in the finale at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena.

In order to have clinched the fourth and finale playoff spot in the North Division, Utica needed to win and for the St. John's IceCaps to loose its finale as well. But neither happened.

On Friday, the Comets battled for a hard fought 5-4 win over Hartford in the home finale at The Utica AUD to keep their hopes alive heading into the final night. But on Saturday, the Thruway rival Crunch smothered Utica by jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead, then leaping ahead 4-1 in the second.

Utica's Nikolay Goldobin scored both Comets goals - his third and fourth in just three games with the Comets.

The Crunch will meet in the IceCaps in the opening round of the Calder Cup Playoffs.

The Comets thanked fans on social media for their continued support of the team - which includes an ongoing home sellout streak that included every game the The AUD this season.
