New York could soon have the highest statewide minimum wage in the country.

Governor Andrew Cuomo is proposing a two-tiered bump in the minimum wage to $11.50 an hour in New York City and $10.50 in the rest of New York state.

The state's current minimum wage is $8.75 an hour.

If Cuomo's wage hike plan is approved by the legislature, that would be the first time the city has had a different minimum wage than the rest of the state.
