BABYLON, N.Y. (AP) — Police say a flying tire from a truck landed on a car on a Long Island highway, killing one person.

The state Department of Transportation says the crash happened on Sunrise Highway in Babylon around 2:15 p.m. Thursday.

The department says a truck traveling eastbound lost a tire, and it flew into the westbound lanes and hit a Saturn. The driver of the Saturn lost control and hit the center median.

One person inside the vehicle was pronounced dead. It's unclear whether the person was the driver or a passenger.

The tire continued and struck a woman's SUV. Both she and her passenger are uninjured.

Police are now searching for the truck that lost the tire. Police say it's unclear whether the truck driver knew what happened.
