ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York state will spend up to $20 million on upgrades and improvements at Whiteface and Gore mountains.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the work on Monday. He says it's part of the state's effort to encourage winter tourism in New York's North Country and to make two of its top destinations more competitive with other ski resorts.

The money will pay to expand the Bear Den Lodge at Whiteface and add a bar and restaurant. It will also support renovations at the Adirondack Base Lodge, and pay for the creation of what the governor's office says will be the one of the longest zip lines in North America.

Gore Mountain's share of the money will pay several upgrades including new meeting room space and amenities at the Northwoods Lodge.
