Webster, NY (WIBX) - Police are now confirming that the gunman has been shot and killed, although they are not saying whether he was shot by police or whether he killed himself.

Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering says that it appears the shooting was set up and was not a random act.

The rescue workers who were killed have been identified as Webster Police Lieutenant Michael Chiapperini and Monroe County 911 dispatcher Tomasz Kaczowka.  Volunteer firefighters Joseph Hofsetter and Theodore Scardino as well as Greece police officer John Ritter were injured.  The name of the shooter has not yet been released.

New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman released a statement that reads, "Following this senseless tragedy, our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, heroically protecting the communities they serve.  The contributions made by the fallen and injured officers in Webster will never be forgotten. As this investigation unfolds, we stand with our partners in law enforcement to ensure that lethal weapons are out of the hands of dangerous people, so that brave New Yorkers who risk their lives every day to protect us are not exposed to additional danger."
