Voters in the Herkimer Central School District rejected the school board's proposed budget this week, along with the 5.6% tax increase that was included in it.

Sixty percent approval was needed because the spending plan's tax increase was larger that the state's 2% cap.

A second vote will likely take place on June 16, but the school board will make a decision at its next meeting, Superintendent Robert Miller said. The district could also opt to adopt a contingency budget, but it would come with more than $500,000 in cuts and mean a loss of teachers, administrators and programs he said.
