At around 4:30 p.m. Ilion Police closed several streets surrounding a home at 78 West Clark Street in the Village. The Ilion Police Department, assisted by units from Mohawk and the Town of Frankfort had been notified that William "Billy" Buchanan, 36, had locked himself inside the house and refused to come out.

Buchanan, who is wanted by the IPD for an arrest warrant for assault, as well as for violation of probation, had been on the run from police for several weeks.

According to IPD, Buchanan had made several references to Kurt Myers and stated that he had intentions to copycat Myers if he was approached by police.

Kurt Myers is the man who allegedly shot and killed multiple people in the Villages of Mohawk and Herkimer in March, before dying in a shootout with police.

A crisis negotiator made contact with Buchanan and at around 6:53 p.m. Wednesday and after negotiations, Buchanan agreed to surrender peacefully.

Buchanan later appeared in front of Village Judge Stephen Canipe in the Village of Ilion Justice Court. Buchanan was arraigned on the assault charge where he was sent to Herkimer County Correctional Facility on $5,000 cash or $10,000 bond. While at the Herkimer Jail, the Violation of Probation Warrant was served. Buchanan will be held at the jail until he can appear in County Court on a later date.
