Mets Edge Yankees 2-1 On Murphy’s Single In The Eighth
David Wright homered to tie it in the seventh and Daniel Murphy smacked a two-out line drive back up the middle in the eighth to push the Mets to a 2-1 win in game one of the 2013 Subway Series at Citi Field.
The late rally spoiled a strong outing by Phil Hughes, who allowed just four hits - two to Wright and two to opposing pitcher Jonathon Niese - and one run over seven innings while striking out six.
Niese also yielded just one run, on eight hits through seven. Neither starter factored in the decision.
Murphy's game winner in the eighth came off Boone Logan, after reliever David Robertson (L, 3-1) yielded two hits and a walk in just 2/3 of an inning, and just two innings after Brett Gardner robbed Murphy of a home run (photo).
Brandon Lyon (W, 2-2) was credited with the win after working a scoreless eighth.
Bobby Parnell earned his eighth save in ten chances.
Rookie phenom Matt Harvey (5-0, 1.93) looks to extend the Mets' win streak to three on Tuesday, squaring off against Hiroki Kuroda (6-3, 2.67).
